Buddhism was the main religion in Pataliputra. It really took off in the 3rd Dynasty with the help of Ashoka. Ashoka was Indian emperor of the Maurya Dynasty. He transformed Buddhism into the most influential religion of the 3rd Dynasty.
Beginning of Buddhism in PataliputraBuddhism started in India around the 5th century BCE. It first spread to the north of India near Pakistan. Buddhism is based on the Four Noble Truths. They are the following:

Buddha Himself- Siddhartha GautamaHe was born in Kapilavastu Nepal to parents Queen Maha Maya, Mahapajapati, Gotami and King Suddhodana. He them married Queen Yashodhara, and died in Kushinagar, India. Buddha started to follow his beliefs and teach it to people in his civilization, and they started telling people and then eventually it evolved and became a religion.
